Boxing club classes or a personal coach? The real differences, who each option suits and what to ask before you sign up in Alicante.

Search for boxing in Alicante and the first results are gyms and clubs with classes for many people at once. They suit a lot of people, but they are not the only option. Here is an honest look at how a boxing gym differs from a personal boxing coach, and how to tell which one suits you.

What each option is

  • Boxing gym or club: classes for many students on a fixed timetable, one coach for many students and, usually, a monthly fee.
  • Personal boxing coach: private sessions, one-to-one or for two people, at an agreed time and with a plan built for you. You pay per session.

Advantages of a boxing gym

  • A group atmosphere and training partners to keep you motivated.
  • A monthly price per person that is usually lower than a private session.
  • If you want to compete, a club gives you partners of different weights and levels.

The trade-off is attention: in a class of many students the coach splits their time between everyone. If you are starting from scratch, it is easy to pick up bad habits in your guard or punches without anyone correcting them in time.

Advantages of a personal coach

  • Constant correction: every punch, step and defensive move is checked on the spot.
  • A plan built around your goal: learning technique, getting fit, gaining confidence or preparing for a tournament.
  • Session times agreed with you based on availability, instead of a fixed timetable.
  • No group pressure: ideal if you feel shy about starting or have never done a contact sport.
  • Sparring only if you want it, and only when you are ready.

My sessions take place in a fully equipped boxing gym in Alicante, with bags and room to work properly. If we agree on it, we can also train outdoors or in your area: San Vicente del Raspeig, San Juan de Alicante, Mutxamel or El Campello.

How much does each option cost?

Clubs usually charge a monthly fee for their classes; check their rates, as they vary a lot between gyms. My one-to-one personal training costs €35 per session and training for two costs €60 per session for both of you. No sign-up fee, monthly fee or minimum commitment. See pricing and how much a personal boxing coach costs.

Which option suits you

  • Choose a gym if training among many people is what motivates you most, you already have some technique and you want the lowest monthly cost.
  • Choose a personal coach if you are starting from zero, want faster progress, have changing hours or prefer a calm environment. More in how to start boxing from scratch.
  • If you have a partner, friend or child to train with, a session for two lowers the price per person without losing attention. More in one-to-one or in pairs.
  • For children and teenagers, a few private sessions help them learn technique and confidence before joining a group: see kids boxing and teen boxing.

You can also combine both: many people book a few personal sessions to learn the basics properly and then train at a club, or the other way round, they go to a club and book private sessions to polish what they struggle with.

Questions to ask before you sign up

  • How many students are there per coach in each class?
  • Is there a beginners' group, or does everyone train together?
  • Is sparring compulsory? From when?
  • Is there a sign-up fee, minimum commitment or minimum payment?
  • Can I try a session before deciding?

Whatever you choose, what matters is starting with good technique and training consistently. If you want to see how I work, meet your coach or read what to bring to your first session.
